Pleiades: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Angela Correa Originally from the small town of Yuba City in Northern California, Correatown (aka Angela Correa) has lived and traveled over much of the world. Those explorations stay close to her, one of the reasons why the music skirts genres; it is an amalgam of fuzzed out lo-fi indie rock, early American folk and the darker tones of classic rock. Influenced as much by Elisabeth Cotton and Jack Elliot as PJ Harvey and Neil Young, Correatown brings subtle stories to life with fluid melodies and distinctive arrangements. Haunting, genuine, beautiful and sparse are words often used to describe the music of Correatown. Correatown was a name someone called her once. Imagine the lights that slowly haze by when you’re driving home late at night bleary eyed, or the night sky heavy with clouds just after a thunderstorm. It’s Angela Correa’s band daydream fully realized in a dark club filled with the reverberating layers of washy guitars, beautiful harmonies, growling fuzzed out analog synths and a melodious voice. Based in the Eastside of Los Angeles, the band is a mainstay in the tightly knit local music community. |

Natalie Walker
|
Spark: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Natalie Walker Electronic textures, intimate revelations – that’s the fundamental formula of Natalie Walker’s evocative, elemental, bluntly emotional new album, Spark (Dorado Records). Spark finds the Indiana-born, Colorado-based singer-songwriter, whose prior work has been heard on Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Bones, 90210, Smallville and Entourage, among other places, hitting a new creative plateau. With her richly expressive vocals floating in elegant, spacious instrumental settings, Walker explores powerfully personal territory on tracks like the reflective “I Found You,” the questing “Sunday Afternoon,” the gorgeous life lesson “Mars” and the delicate first single, “Uptight.” She also shows her adventurous side, feeling the rush of a humid Brooklyn night in the sensuous “Cool Kids” and diving headfirst into desire on the swooning “Against the Wall." Spark – which also includes a ravishing cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’
“Galapogos” – occupies a sonic sweet spot between pop and electronica,
but it’s more attuned to the demands of her storytelling than to any
musical pigeonhole. Walker crafted half the tracks with Ted Bruner
(Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Plain White T’s) and half with Dan Chen and Nate
Greenberg of Stuhr (Mya, Nicole Atkins, Bebel Gilberto), the
Brooklyn-based production team behind 2008’s With You and her 2006 solo
debut, Urban Angel. Yet Spark is remarkably consistent; its jewel-box
arrangements never crowd the song, incorporating eclectic
instrumentation such as MiniMoog, vocoder, Fender Rhodes, cello and
harpsichord . Creating it, however, was a bit of a journey. Walker
flew to L.A., meeting with a string of writers, but didn’t click with
any of them. Then she encountered Bruner. “I walk into Ted’s studio –
it’s dark and he’s got a discoball going,” she remembers. “Instead of
saying ‘Let’s come up with a hook,’ he wanted to know about me. He asked
all kinds of questions. I got impatient, but he said, ‘I can't work
with you if I don't know your story.’ Then I got it.” Bruner’s
unorthodox route led to the incandescent song “I Found You.” “I revealed
things about myself in that song that I’d never said publicly,” she
relates. “But Ted refused to let me include a single detail that wasn’t
true.” The song crystallizes Walker’s deep connection with the physical
world, notably the awe-inspiring night sky of Colorado. |

Shannon Hurley
|
California: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Shannon Hurley Hand-picked as one of Rolling Stone’s top 25 best bands on MySpace,
Shannon Hurley released her debut album "Ready to Wake Up" in 2007. An
honest voice paired with pure and simple lyrics called to mind a young
Carole King with the pop sensibility of Aimee Mann. When Shannon put out
a call for remixes, the Creative Commons community responded with over
500 versions of her songs. She drew from the best of the tracks and
compiled an album called "Second Light: The Ready to Wake Up Remixes". Determined
to make the most personal album yet, she is following up with
"California" (which started with a single self-titled track in January
2009). "Beg Steal Borrow", which will also be on the new album, appeared
on the Emmy nominated web-based series "Venice". Many fans helped fund
the recording through Kickstarter and with their help, the album will
have a release in June 2011. Shannon's voice will be heard on the upcoming Armada Music/Rebrand Records release "Sun Gone Down" by Protoculture. Already featured on A State of Trance Radio as track of the week, this tune will launch on the 4th of July, 2011.

Fanfare for Love: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Coby Grant Coby Grant is from Perth, Australia and now lives in Melbourne, Australia where she has been for the past four years. Her first professionally recorded EP was released in Feb. 2009. With influences like Carole King, The Eagles, Eric Clapton and Joni Mitchell, and a sound compared to Regina Spektor, Colbie Caillat, and Ingrid Michaelson, this Australian native has something different, something extra, something special - an uncanny ability to connect with her audience through her charming and earnest lyrics about life, love and everything in between, breezy acoustic simplicity, beautiful melodies, sweet voice and infectious grin. |
Jensen Keets |
Expectations: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Jensen Keets Jensen’s debut album, “Jensen Keets” explores the complexities of being a modern day woman in the city. “Strong” is a powerful ode that starts off with a somber tone. It is about the September 11th terrorist attacks, but it’s also about the current economic crisis. She sings, “Empty pocket pain. The days of golden homes are now homeless days. But New Yorkers refuse to stunt their faith. Cause we believe in peace and love for one planet all race.” This is modern poetry set to music. “Expectations” is a song that questions this society’s constant need to “trade up” to a better house, car, and life. The video shows Jensen walking through cobble stone streets as she belts out the chorus, “Come and save me. Expectations on the rise. But they lie. So why do you set them so high.” Jensen has the unique ability to boil down complex ideas to their bare essence, and she makes it jangly and singable too. This song is reminiscent of Sheryl Crow’s “Everyday is a Winding Road” in terms of clever lyrics and “gets stuck in your head” chorus. “Cry” is probably the most personal song on the album. It is about her mother’s recent death from an inoperable brain tumor. She says, “After my mother died, I realized that life really is not forever. I needed to stop putting things on hold and start facing my fears and chasing after my musical dreams.” |
|
Susan Hyatt |
Lovelier in Black: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Susan Hyatt Stimulator is back with a vengeance playing biting alternative rock music enhanced with heavy electronic grooves and brutally honest lyrics. Sporting fresh shiny new black locks and her naturally strong candid female presence, Singer Susan Hyatt teams up once again with original Stimulator guitarist/producer/co-songwriter and co-founding member Geoff Tyson. The result is signature Stimulator with sweeping melodic guitar melodies and world class James Bond style production. The third CD, appropriately entitled "Lovelier in Black," showcases Stimulator simply doing what they do best, rocking out with no apologies. Susan plays every inch of the Gothic princess but admits to having more in common with vintage PJ Harvey than with the blockbuster epic dark popsters Evanessence. |
|
Jennifer Greer |
Fistful of Stars: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Jennifer Greer Jennifer’s songs run from aggressive to impressionistic. She seeks to push the boundaries of pop, by blending jazz, funk and classical. Her songs are often about outer rather than inner subjects, such as stories in the news, characters from books, as well as intimate personal experience. Getting bored with herself easily, she pushes herself and her band to be exciting and refreshing. As a performer, she exudes passion and joy that are tangible, shameless, and direct. Jennifer just released her third and most ambitious album to date, “Fistful of Stars” in February 2010. A sweeping collection of 14 songs, the album showcases Jennifer’s writing at her highest. In these utterly unique songs, her extraordinary voice and passionate piano captivate the heart and mind. “ |

Vienna Teng |
Inland Territory: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Vienna Teng Not so long ago, being a singer-songwriter was merely a hobby for Vienna Teng, a Stanford computer science grad who was on the fast track to a lucrative career, working as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. Noe Venable |
The Summer Storm Journals: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Noe Venable. Noe Venable is a singer-songwriter, composer, and poet. Venable’s newest release, The Summer Storm Journals, has been four years in the making and may be her strongest statement to date. Written over the course of Venable’s transition from the west coast to New York City, and recorded in four different cities, this is an album about change: resisting it, fear in the face of it, surrender to it, and ultimately finding peace in the inescapable reality of uncertainty. Produced with Venable’s longtime collaborator, bassist Todd Sickafoose, the album features a stellar cast of musicians, including violinist Alan Lin, guitarist Adam Levy, (Norah Jones), and avant garde marimba virtuouso, Payton MacDonald, (Alarm Will Sound). |
|
Terami Hirsch |
A Broke Machine: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Terami Hirsch. What sets Terami's music apart from other piano-based artists, is her near disregard for the purity of the acoustic instrument. Preferring to work with keyboards and digital editing software, Terami shapes songs as if they were paper and glue, allowing imperfections to texture her otherwise meditative and cerebral music. This approach is surprising to some—as many people equate digital with polished, smooth sounds. Terami's music personifies the heart in the machine, as she pushes the creative edges of reputably heartless software. Terami explains, "In album production, it's exciting to create unexpected terrain within the landscape of a simple song. By using my computer as an instrument, the whole process becomes flexible and dynamic in ways that continue to push how I express myself on record.” |
|
Ann Licater |
Following the Call: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Ann Licater. is a life-long silver flute player who discovered the inspirational and healing music of the Native American flute at a powwow. She uses her intuition and classical training to create beautiful, original melodies and breathtaking improvisations on these sacred instruments. Her “Flute for the Soul” workshops teach how contemporary replicas of ancient wood and clay flutes can be used as tools for personal discovery and spiritual practice. Her workshops explore how people are drawn to certain flutes or songs depending on what they are discovering about themselves at the time. She encourages listeners of her music to take the time to journal, meditate and reflect on an issue worth exploring and see how these sound vibrations help build intuitive skills for self-discovery. Ann studied classical flute at MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, MN and Native American flute with master flutist R. Carlos Nakai at the “Renaissance of the Native American Flute” in Helena, Montana. In addition to recording, performing and facilitating workshops, Ann is a public speaker on the subjects of spirituality, creative expression and personal discovery. She
holds a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and a
Master of Liberal Arts degree in Creation Spirituality from Naropa
University, Boulder, CO. Ann resides in the San Francisco Bay area. |

Shikhee of Android Lust |
Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Shikhee of Android Lust. Born in Bangladesh, Android Lust auteur Shikhee has been exploring the cutting edge of desire, rage, and panic in her songs since her first independent release in 1998. Borrowing elements from diverse musical styles, Android Lust presents a blend of electronic rock that is provocative, engaging, and fiercely emotional. Shikhee has been making quite the name for herself in the indie electronic music community. Her music evolves with each release, showing a greater musical range than the plethora of unoriginal and copycat bands in the scene. Shikhee continues this trend with Devour, Rise, and Take Flight (2006 Projekt Records), her new full length release since 2003's The Dividing. Devour, Rise, and Take Flight
is an unforgiving electronic rock assault carried across twelve
powerful tracks. Shikhee's commanding voice takes center stage, set
against her most challenging, yet accessible songwriting to date. And
in true Android Lust fashion, she saves her best hooks for her most
vicious sentiments, all while taking modern electronic music even
further to the edge. |

Jonatha Brooke |
Careful What You Wish For: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Jonatha Brooke. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonatha Brooke has been issuing albums that
merge folk and pop since the early '90s; first as a member of a duo
called the Story, and then later as a solo artist. Brooke formed the
Story (originally called Jonatha & Jennifer for their first few
years together) along with another vocalist, Jennifer Kimball, while
the pair was both attending Boston's Amherst College in the early '80s.
Despite playing locally on a regular basis during their college career,
the duo never issued any demos or albums, and took a break for a period
after graduation; during which time Brooke joined a dance troupe. But
by the end of the '80s, the group had re-formed, now called the Story,
and issued a demo called Over Oceans in 1989. The Story was promptly
signed to the independent Green Linnet label, which issued the duo's
debut full-length album, Grace in Gravity, in 1991. It wasn't long

reissuing their debut the same year, as well as a sophomore effort, The
Angel in the House, two years later. |

Ashley Maher |
Flying Over Bridges: Cutting Edge Voices is proud to present an interview with Ashley Maher. Born to British parents in Canada, and moving to Los Angeles when she was five, Ashley's gift as a singer was recognized early on. She grew up singing jazz, classical, choral, and medieval music and even studied opera in Italy for a year, before falling irrevocably in love with African music. Stumbling upon a class by Ghanaian master drummer, C.K. Ladzekpo, at UC Berkeley, Ashley knew she had found her calling. She studied with him for two years, before graduating and moving to London in search of African musicians. London was alive with global music. Ashley performed with her band for
two years before collaborating with premier traditional dance and
drumming group, Adzido, to record her first set of demos. The tape
soon came to the attention of the record companies and she signed a
contract with Virgin U.K.
Virgin released two records for Ashley. The first, named "hi," was met
with critical acclaim and hailed as a promising debut. The second,
"Pomegranate," featured a superb selection of Paris-based African
musicians and again was met with positive press. |

Anne Heaton |
I Know This: Cutting Edge Voices
is proud to present an interview with Anne Heaton. Starting with lessons at age three, Heaton was a studied classical pianist.
She listened to everything from Dexy’s Midnight Runners to Joni Mitchell to the
Rolling Stones to the Fine Young Cannibals. While studying Philosophy &
Theology at Notre Dame, she sang in a rock band. After graduation, she ran a
music program for teenagers in Chicago’s Cabrini Green Housing Projects. A few
years later Heaton moved from Chicago to New York and joined a Gospel Choir in
Harlem. This was the point when Anne started writing songs. “Hearing Peter
Gabriel’s ‘Us’ for the first time, made me realize how powerful it could be to
relate your psychological and spiritual experiences in a way that was musically
beautiful and resonant. I felt like Peter Gabriel was expressing my inner world
or what I wished the world were like. I thought that if I could ever touch
someone else in the way that he had reached me, I would be very happy.” |

is proud to present an interview with Charlotte Martin. Charlotte is a Singer/songwriter got her
start singing opera while attending Eastern Illinois University in the late
'90s. Her father was a respected professor in the music department, and naturally Martin
followed his footsteps. She'd been playing piano since she was a little girl and
her childhood was surrounded by music. While attending school, Martin
experienced "real life," from living with her goth roommate and dealing with
typical college-like drama to the tragic suicides of two close friends. Martin
turned to music for solace. She desperately wanted to make music into a career;
therefore, a whirlwind move to Los Angeles seemed like the right thing to do. |
